The 10/40 Window
Great swathes of the surface area of our globe are still without a significant
indigenous Christian witness. The maps in chapter 9 give the extent to which the
Gospel has already spread. In the 1995 map the major gaps are clearly seen. This
is predominantly in North Africa and Asia where Isram, Hinduism and Buddhism
are usuaally the dominant religions. The map on the following page highlights this
challenging part of the world. This must be the area of major focus for pioneer
mission in the next decade or more. However it has been the area of greatest
neglect until recently.
For years I called this the Resistant Belt. Since 1990 the phrase, The 10/40
Window, coined by Luis Bush of the AD 2000 Mvt., has become widely known.
This is the area between the latitudes 10 and 40 north of the equator and
between the Atlantic and and Pacific Oceans. The concept is good and the
publicity impact brillint-even if this rectangle only appoximates to the areas of
greatest spiritual challenge. Basically the countries in or near the 10/40Window
that are under-evangelized have only 35% of the world's surface area, but 65% of
its population. The map opposite includes both the 10/40 Window concept shown
by the rectangle and the Resistant Belt with the shading.
The sheer number of people living in the Window area is daunting. Of the 6 billion
people in the world in 2000, I reckon that 1.201.4 billion have never had the
change to hear the Gospel, and over 95% of these individuals reside in the
Window area. How can we smugly ignore such a huge number facing a Christless
eternity of God as revealed in the Lord Jesus? What a challenge to faith,
intercession and action-we are obligated to do something about it for the love of
Christ constrains us.
To add to the challenge, over 90%of the world's poorest and most deprived, the
children that are most abused and most of the world's illiterate live in the Window
area. This is where diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria rempage
largely unchecked and untreated. It is also these areas that are the least
accessible for any overt mission endeavour either because of antagonistic political
and religions systems. geography or lifestyle. For instance, almost all of the
world's nomads live here. We face our biggest challenge yet in world
evangelization. The tide of the gospel has risen and flowed over two thirds of the
earth, and is lapping at the one third where the final bastions and citadels of
Satan's kingdom have yet to be broken down. Let us not minimise the size of the
remaining task, but also not be discouraged by its magnitude.

10/40 창 지역에 살고 있는 인구의 수는 계속 증가하고 있다. 2000년에는 세계 인구 60억 가운데 12-14억에 해당하는 사람들이 복음을 전혀 들어보지 못할 가능성이 있는 것으로 추정되는데, 그러한 사람들의 95퍼센트가 바로 이 지역에 살고 있다. 그렇게 엄청난 숫자의 사람들이 복된 소식을 들어 볼 기회조차 갖지 못하고, 우리 주 예수님을 통해 계시된 하나님의 사랑을 체험할 기회조차 갖지 못한 채, 그리스도가 계시지 않는 영원한 지옥을 향해 달려가고 있는 상황을 어떻게 무시할 수 있겠는가? 이 지역은 우리의 믿음과 중보 기도와 행동에 많은 도전을 주는 지역이다. 그리스도의 사랑이 우리를 강권하시기 때문에 우리는 이 지역에 대해 무언가를 해야 할 의무가 있다.
이러한 도전뿐만 아니라 세계에서 가장 가난하고 가장 혜택을 누리지 못하는 사람들, 가장 학대받는 어린이들, 가장 문맹률이 높은 사람들의 90퍼센트 이상이 바로 이 10/40 창 지역에 살고 있다. 이 지역은 에이즈와 결핵, 말라리아와 같은 질병들이 진료되지도, 치료되지도 않은 채 만연하고 있는 지역이기도 하다. 적대적인 정치나 종교 체제, 지리적인 여건과 생활 양식 때문에 공개적인 선교가 가장 힘든 지역이 바로 이 지역이다. 예를 들면 세계의 대부분의 유목민들이 이곳에 살고 있다. 우리는 아직까지도 세계 복음화에 있어서 가장 큰 도전에 직면하고 있다. 복음의 물결은 지구의 3분의 2지역에 흘러갔고, 사단의 왕국의 마지막 요새와 보루가 무너져 내려야만 하는 지구의 3분의 1 지역에 파도가 치고 있다. 남아 있는 과업을 과소평가해서도 안 되겠지만, 그 과업의 막중함에 의해 낙심해서도 안 될 것이다.
